Me
Poem
The following poem was published by the Hallmark Company in an adoption keepsake book:
Tonight, as you lie sleeping for
the first time in your bed
I feel there's something lasting and
profound that should be said
But nothing I can think of seems
quite fitting, so instead,
Welcome home, my child,
at long last, welcome home
Welcome home from every yesterday,
from every "then and there"
to the now and evermore that's here for you
Welcome home to true belonging
…to together…times we'll share,
and countless family things that we will do.
Welcome home toe very hope and
dream Must waiting to be yours
To hands that long to guide you as you grow.
Welcome home to understanding and devotion that endures
To hearts that love you now more than you can know.
Tomorrow, when you wake up, a brand new life will start
A life in which you'll always be a very special part.
So dream sweet dreams and from the bottom of my heart,
Welcome home, my child. Forever
WELCOME HOME!
ME?
I don't know who you are
But I know why you're here.
I've seen many like you
But, I'll not come near.
When I was little
I'd run and call out,
But now that I'm older;
You choosing me I doubt.
Babies are cuddly;
They smile and coo.
Toddlers are sweet,
They're wanted too.
But when you are my age
There isn't much hope?
I won't smile; I'll stand back.
It's the way that I cope.
But why does the "mama"
Who's always cared for me.
Point in my direction
So that me you can see?
You're coming towards me.
Why? What did I do?
You're smiling and crying.
I'm told, I'm for you!
I don't understand
I'm not cuddly and cute.
You're arms go around me
I find myself mute.
Many are talking
I'm told I should smile.
I feel so confused,
It might take me a while.
I don't understand you.
I don't know words that you say.
But I do understand,
I have a family this day.
