Vladivostok Tips

Places to Eat

Chinese Restaurant – This restaurant is particularly good for large groups. It’s inexpensive and has an excellent variety of food. The menu is in Russian, but there is an English pictured menu for the asking and waitresses who speak English are available. Also, separate private rooms are available. For location, walk past the main square (GUM side) and look for the red Chinese lanterns hanging outside.

Chinese Restaurant – Located on the White House side of the main street about 4 blocks past the main square and one block towards the harbor, is a Chinese restaurant with live music and dancing. Prices are reasonable. Watch for the belly dancers. ? Children not permitted after 8:00 p.m.

Nostalgia – Located on the street which runs to the train station. Small but very pleasant restaurant serving excellent food.

Places to Visit

Dolphinarium – Seals doing tricks, dolphins, and baluga whales in small enclosures. You may pay a small fee to have your picture taken with the seals or the whales. Located on the ocean past the marina

Aquarium – A nice aquarium with interesting exhibits. Faces the fish market at the public beach/fair grounds.

Fair grounds – Children’s rides such as bumper cars, small rollercoaster, minature train, etc. On the public beach near the marine.

Fort near the marina – behind the aquarium is a fort museum which is well worth exploring. Saturday’s, costumed actors fight with swords. The noon gun is fired from this site.

Indoor Zoo – Attached to the aqaurium on the city side is a small indoor zoo.

Vladivostok Museum – At the top of the stairs at across the street from the White House is the larger Vladivostok Museum. Some very nice displays and a large map where many families have their pictures taken.

Fort on the Hill – Just out of town is an excellent fort on the hill. Tours through the tunnels are fascinating and the history presented is very interesting.

Submarine – Located on the harbor lower road past the White House. You can’t miss it. It has been mostly stripped, but interesting.

Ship tour – Very near the submarine on the ocean. Marine museum.

University Museum – Excellent museum

Circus – At various times of the year, the circus comes to Vladivostok. An excellent cultural experience.

Theatre – Various performances are available throughout the year. The musical theatre we experienced was excellent.

Shopping

On the main street is a flower shop, but as you enter, you can see that it is really lined with several small flower shops. As you procede through, shops of various descriptions appear. Head out the back door and there is an alley lined with shops. Just outside the back doors, on the left, is a view to the railway. At the top of the alley, the street merchants have taken over (moved from the market place across from the aquarium street).

Under the main square are two floors of markets. The upper floor is fairly expensive, but the lower floor is very interesting and bargains can be found. Entrances are a little shed on the main square with stairs leading straight down, a door at the bottom of the stairs in the middle of the main square (turn sharply to the right), or on the lower harbour road in the middle of the main square wall.

The GUM is 4 floors of shops. Across from the main square.
